Picks: Galactic and Holy Fuck

My Picks of the Week haven’t been as weekly as I’d like, so here are a couple quick hits.

First up is this killer groove by Galactic, “Cineramascope.” A collaboration with Trombone Shorty, the song is driven by a fuzzy, relentless bass line, with horn stabs dancing around bass line. (In doing research for this song, it turns out it is in Spider-Man: Homecoming, so good on Galactic to get this tune in a major movie.)

I became a fan of Galactic 20+ years ago, in the early days of downloading concert audio from the information superhighway. A lot of “jam bands” were sanctioning the release of soundboard recordings (a high quality recording taken from the soundboard at the show instead of an audience recording with a microphone setup), and I ended up with dozens of great early Galactic shows.

They started as a more traditional Meters-like New Orleans funk band, but to their credit, they’ve continued to push and meld their music with multiple styles, and they’ve included several different guest vocalists, including funk, soul and hip hop artists.

Holy Fuck is a name I’ve seen around for a number of years, but I hadn’t listened to their music until recently. What a miss!

Formed in Toronto in 2004, they’ve released four albums and a recent EP, all packed with killer instrumental tracks that incorporate Casio keyboard drum beats and toy gun sounds. It’s loop-based instrumental music, without the loops. Eschewing laptops, it’s music played by actual musicians, which gives their earlier albums a tight, but raw feel.

“Red Lights” comes from their 2009 album Latin.

Not a fan of cats overall, but this video is pretty funny.
